CNG Services is the UK’s acknowledged market leading provider of
Biomethane to Grid (BtG) connections, having pioneered the
technology, from the first pilot at Didcot in 2010 to the first
commercial connection at Poundbury in 2012. To date, the company
has provided engineering and commercial support to around 90% of
the BtG projects completed in the UK. This includes all the
water company BtG connections to date.
CNG has introduced the concept of the Hybrid Energy Centre (HEC)
to ensure water companies get maximum return from their energy
investment. The HEC comprises a CHP plant sized for base load
electricity and heat, fuelled by biogas or natural gas from the
grid which can operate at times when electricity prices peak.
The concept also includes a biomethane injection plant designed
to operate flexibly, particularly when electricity prices are
low and less heat is required on site. A compression plant is
also added for produce vehicle fuel, so companies can save on
transport for sludge. Biomethane is increasingly being used as a
fuel for transport in the UK, where it is known as Bio-CNG. CNG
is cheaper than diesel and offers big environmental benefits;
specifically CNG vehicles do not contribute to air pollution and
are very quiet.
In 2016 CNG Services was awarded the Queen's Award for
Enterprise 2016 - Innovation, in recognition of the company's
leadership role in the creation of the BtG market.
