Luxulyan STW: Temporary Isolation Works
Luxulyan Sewage Treatment Works
Project Overview
Carrying out maintenance and installation work within an operational wastewater treatment works requires careful coordination between construction activities and the processes that must continue running. At Luxulyan Sewage Treatment Works, work was required within a live aeration ditch containing two submersible mixers. With no spare process capacity available, isolating the work area was particularly challenging: the solution needed to facilitate the planned activities without overlooking the operational requirements of the treatment process.
The presence of existing equipment within the ditch added another consideration. The temporary isolation arrangement needed to establish a suitable working boundary while accounting for the mixers and the constraints of the existing installation. Site coordination was also important, with simultaneous operations and the interfaces between different activities requiring consideration during the planning stage.
Our Solution
High Water developed a split Modular Limpet Dam arrangement to establish a temporary isolation boundary within the aeration ditch. The approach was designed around the existing process environment and the need to create a defined working area without relying on diver intervention.
A key part of the solution was considering the isolation boundary as part of the wider construction sequence, rather than treating the dam as a standalone piece of equipment. The location of the boundary, the existing mixers and the interaction between site activities all formed part of the planning considerations. This helped ensure that the temporary works approach was aligned with the practical requirements of undertaking construction within an operational facility.

The Outcome
The arrangement provided a practical means of establishing temporary isolation within the live treatment environment, supporting the planned works without requiring divers to install the isolation solution.

The project highlights the importance of early planning when temporary water control is required inside operational wastewater infrastructure. Understanding process constraints, existing equipment and simultaneous operations is essential to developing an isolation solution that works for both the construction team and the wider site.
