The purpose of the model was to provide evidence that the water has a minimum t5 retention time of 20 minutes to comply with the standard if the raw groundwater is considered unstable, or 15 minutes if considered stable. A non-reactive tracer was added to the model at the primary dosing point and measured at the outlet through time to obtain its exit age distribution. The model was run as a worst-case scenario with one of the furthest of the four tanks taken out of service; meaning only three were modelled including interconnecting pipework. The model was also based on a 15 MLD design horizon which is conservative as it is 1.5 MLD beyond the abstraction limit and capability of the existing borehole pumps.
It was agreed with the client that the groundwater was considered stable such that a 15-minute t5 was the target figure, and the model showed an 18.2-minute t5 with 21m long contact tanks. This offered a saving of approximately £230k by having shorter tanks because the CFD modelling showed that 25m long tanks would have been required for a 20-minute t5. This would have made delivery of the tanks down Ufton Lane even more challenging. Even so, Autotrack analysis was completed to confirm in theory there was a route to the site, which was viable for delivery of the 21m tanks, which the tank suppliers’ delivery management company confirmed was possible during a pre-delivery survey. This was considered to be the right balance of resilience and affordability because it is unlikely the unstable groundwater events would occur at peak design horizon demand whilst one of the contact tanks is out of service.

Use of SYNCRO to hold a digital construction rehearsal to de-risk programme: A P6 programme has been produced which lists numerous construction activities and outages limited to eight hours due to the island zone constraint, and a 3D model has been produced to illustrate the physical space each asset needs when installed. As part of MMB’s Digital Delivery Plan SYNCRO (one of the digital tools utilised by MMB) was used to hold a construction rehearsal which led to the following benefits; a better understanding of the space constraints, engaged client stakeholders for programme buy-in, improved safety and a de-risked programme.
By combining the P6 programme with the 3D model and reviewing it via SYNCHRO software allowed a better understanding of the concurrent activities and the ability to spot where there could have been potential space constraints. The digital rehearsal revealed that the design was proposing to install precast pipe support plinths and the access metalwork at the same time as the contact tanks were being installed, so SYNCHRO was used to update the P6 programme live to re-sequence the work.
This rehearsal simulated the contract lift of the contact tanks and illustrated just how much space was needed to have a safe working area to complete a lift of a 21m long 10t tank on a 20m radius. This again led to a change in the construction sequence of the mechanical installation of pipework and access metalwork.
Focusing on safety and being prepared to challenge programme where there looked to be too much concurrent working, should ensure a right first-time approach before committing to starting on site, reducing the risk to quality or safety and having to abortively re-plan works, which may end up increasing costs.

The digital rehearsal review coincided with a change in a key construction assurance client team member, so the above process sought their buy-in and confidence in the construction programme and occurred at a significate project milestone (contractual solution review) where the client can make a go/no-go decision on whether the project goes ahead into detailed design and construction. The review received positive feedback from the client that the session proved to be a valuable and more engaging way to bring them up to speed with the scheme and the construction programme.
The project will revisit SYNCHO to plan in more detail at other key milestones like works outages, or whilst on site as a more visual way of completing 5-week-look-ahead planning sessions. MMB has a Digital Delivery Network which is a community of people who can support projects with tools like SYNCHRO and others which can be found on the MMB Digital Delivery Hub.
The benefits of this digital rehearsal were more cost/risk mitigation rather than direct cost reduction on a project. The estimated consequence of not having realised the space constraints and programme concurrent working is 10-weeks lost time meaning £148k cost increase ‘saved’ (avoided). It is difficult to estimate the cost saved/benefit of having a happy engaged client stakeholder like a construction assurance engineer. This is assumed as saving/mitigated a potential two-week delay resulting in a approximately £30k saving.
Providing maintainable assets vs keeping flood plain impact negligible: The existing site not only feeds an ‘island zone’ network; it also becomes an island during flood events and is surrounded by drainage ditches.
Relocating the entire site would be uneconomical and too intrusive so expanding the treatment works into the adjacent field is the best whole life cost solution even if that field is a flood plain. This meant any new assets needed to have as small a footprint as possible to ensure it had negligible impact on the flood plain, and yet still needed to be assessable for the planned maintenance and main driver for the scheme; to be able to take one contact tank out of service for quality and structural inspections.

The solution is to install the steel contact tanks on slim 2m tall concrete plinths, with the inlet/outlet stainless steel pipework supported off steel pipe supports founded on Legato blocks or strip foundations. Precast units were selected where practical and economical to speed up the install to reduce the risk of needing to poor concrete into a floodplain as part of the 10-month long construction programme.
The outlet pipework was looped back to join the inlet pipework such that all the isolation and air valves can be operated from the same common access platform, which is 21m long by 6m wide and stands 2.8m above ground level, which saved approximately £400k in metalwork and civil plinths The platform then bridges over the ditch between the treatment works and adjacent field to provide operational access.
To ensure all the new assets didn’t have a negative impact on the floodplain a flood model and flood risk assessment was completed based on the volume of new assets to be installed in the field, which showed negligible impact to the flood plain.
The contact tanks can be accessed at ground level outside of flood events via a new Grasscrete access road, which removed the need for road drainage which saved £37k. Foundations would have the existing underlying alluvium layer of soft organic clay replaced to target the medium dense gravels layer with stone to allow for better drainage during periods of rainfall and reduce the risk of settlement.
The alternative to the elevated assets would have been to bund the entire area which would have had significant cost, carbon and floodplain offset impact which was calculated using the Mott MacDonald Moata Carbon Portal.

Biodiversity net gain (BNG): Approximately 2m of the existing ditch will be disturbed to install the new headwall, so another section approximately 10m long will be enhanced from poor to moderate condition equating in a 13.3% BNG in river units. The 0.1ha of agricultural grassland will be enhanced from poor to moderate condition to achieve a net gain of 10% to account for that lost from installing the new assets.
Approximately 88 urban trees are proposed to be planted and maintained to moderate condition along the 180m boundary fence line to achieve a net gain of approximately 40%. To achieve a net gain of 10% would mean only 22 small trees needing to be planted, but this would of only provided a visual screening along 25% of the fence line. Therefore a hedgerow will also be planted along approximately 125m of the inside of the fence line to provide further visual screening and offer at least a 27% net gain in BNG hedgerow units.

The profile, mix design and finishing of each element was chosen to suit each product location and optimise production. Should additional or duplicate components be required, all printing files and software programming is available. Working with specialist suppliers, the elements were printed and cured in a factory-controlled environment (humidity, temperature etc), and delivered to site ready for immediate installation - saving time, reducing waste, ensuring quality and reducing embodied carbon over baseline solutions.
Augmented reality (AR): AR software is cutting-edge in construction, taking gaming-based software to provide enhanced visualisation of site and otherwise unseen features (i.e. below-ground assets). The site is crossed by numerous below-ground services and the works interact with several existing below-ground structures. Generally, the works were designed and methodologies developed to not affect the existing equipment. However, the location of apparatus and intrusive nature of the works presented potential risk to delivery teams.
AR was trialled and then used to assist with planning site operations and communicating buried service risks to site teams. The software geolocates and then provides an enhanced view of the existing site in photographic quality with below-ground services and new structures overlaid to essentially make the ground transparent on screen. AR minimised risk to delivery personnel and third-party assets, contributing to the excellent safety record.
4D-modelling and programming: The constrained nature of site made detailed and thorough planning of activities and phasing critical. Parts of the works required numerous engineering disciplines to operate in overlapping/interfacing areas.
Early in the project the use of 4D-modelling was identified as essential to ensure safe and efficient delivery.

The design and construction team opted for Synchro 4D-planning software, which sees the 3D digital model and works programme integrated into the platform. The software then produces a sequence animation of structures and assets being installed. Including the most significant items of temporary works into the model and software allowed teams to understand potential clashes of working space and access and improve resource planning to maximise efficiency.

Ecology and pile installation: A large colony of Daubenton’s bats is known to live in the upstream culvert, using the downstream watercourse within site for feeding. While the works did not directly affect the colony, all works near the culvert were approved by a licensed bat-worker. The approved methodology included assessment of anticipated noise/vibration limits for pile installation.
Assessment considered proximity to sensitive receptors, ground conditions, equipment used and historic data for similar installations. Generally traditional displacement hammer piling was used; areas closer to the culvert were installed with an excavator-mounted MOVAX attachment. Watching briefs and monitoring confirmed no bat disturbance.
Combining temporary and permanent works: The baseline solution included a full structural concrete wet-well. Typically this would be constructed using a temporary sheet-pile cofferdam and framing arrangement. Use of carbon modelling tools and programme scrutiny identified significant carbon and critical path savings by value engineering this structure.
Working across disciplines (hydraulic, geotechnical, structural) and with the client, the temporary works were incorporated into the permanent structure, with the otherwise temporary steel sheet piles made permanent and vertical structural concrete omitted. Corrosion control, flow presentation to the pumps and long-term geotechnical stability were all analysed and engineered to realise the benefit. Over 17-tonnes of carbon were saved, and four-weeks from the critical path.

The power supply to the gate will be a three-phase supply routed via a new MCC, which will contain the control modules, centralised drive units, and the telemetry system for remote monitoring and operation of the gate. The operation of the gate will be from on-site or via telemetry, with some semi-automated functions. The facility for future full automation of the site has been incorporated into the design. The MCC and electrical components will all be located within a kiosk mounted on a raised steelwork platform to lift the electrical components above the 0.1% AEP flood level. Also on this raised platform will be the DNO kiosk bringing power onto the site from the national grid, and a standby generator to provide resilience in case of power failure.

Canklow is currently in the detailed design phase of works. Alongside the gate design some additional civil engineering works are required. This includes some remedial works to the existing sheet piled channel walls including new anchors, a new crane pad to be utilised during construction and to facilitate future gate maintenance as well as the substructure for the new motor control centre (MCC). One of the key constraints of the site are high voltage overheads; therefore, the crane pad location and the siting of the EA’s compound with MCC had to carefully considered.
To assist in undertaking the design and developing the business case for the project, 3D survey was undertaken to create a 3D Matterport tour of the site. It allows the user to quickly navigate around the site and view all the infrastructure remotely. This proved particularly useful during the pandemic when restrictions were in place and site visits were limited.

To refine the design and prove passability for a range of species, the proposed arrangement was modelled using CFD. This allowed the upstand heights to be adjusted to provide the optimum depth and velocities through the range of design flows.

- Faughan Raw Water Pumping Station Flood Protection
Faughan Raw Water Pumping Station Fl...Torrential rain in 2017 led to flash flooding and power outages across Northern Ireland, with the North West suffering badly. The River Faughan overflowed causing major damage to bridges, roads, water mains and flooding to some Northern Ireland Water sites including Faughan Raw Water Pumping Station (RWPS), the sole source of raw water to Carmoney WTW outside Eglinton village.
The requirement
A strategic review identified that an upgrade was required to the River Faughan Raw Water Pumping Station, including the provision of new flood protection measures to the pump building and replacement weir gates, to provide extra security and resilience. This will ensure the supply of raw water robustness to Carmoney Water Treatment Works, delivering a plentiful supply for treatment.The Solution
Initial discussions between Flood Control International and GRAHAM Construction, the main contractor, in October 2021, identified a schedule of protection measures to suit the requirements of the site, which required a flood defence level of over 1.5m height. Following consideration of solutions, a site survey was conducted by Flood Control International to check measurements and fixing methods before final detailed designs were agreed and approved for manufacture. Installation was in 2 phases to suit the contract programme and allow the contractor to undertake remedial works to apertures, including the removal of redundant low level flood defences and making good of concrete floors and walls, to facilitate the installation of the gates and barriers.
Flood Control International designed and installed ten slot-in barriers and six swing hinge gates; Swing hinge gates were the optimum solution for personnel access doors, which are easily operated from inside and outside the building. The gates also included removable thresholds that can be taken out if level access is required for wheeling in crucial equipment, e.g., pumps, valves etc. Slot-in barrier solutions included a 4-sided perimeter barrier to a wet well inside the pump room, to prevent flood water from reaching the main room, control panels and pump motors.
A high degree of precision was required for the detailing of mounting elements, due to the original and new equipment already installed in some locations. In some cases, installation was inside the building (off-seating), so due to the flood load, fixings were drilled all the way through the wall, to ensure the gates and slot-ins will remain secure during a flood event, and protect this critical facility.

- Danson Dam
Danson DamDanson Park Lake is situated within a densely populated area of southeast London, near Bexleyheath. The lake receives water from a small catchment, which is entirely urban, apart from the immediate park, which bounds the lake to the north and south. The watercourse downstream of the dam is culverted for a considerable length, through housing, before emerging in Bexley Woods, approximately 600m downstream of the dam.
The requirement
To comply with Section 10 of the Reservoirs Act 1975, reservoir inspections are required at intervals not exceeding 10 years. During the last inspection it was identified that an increase in the spillway capacity was required to meet new legislation. The existing capacity was limited by the discharge pipework to approximately 2m3/s, whilst the probable maximum “safety check” flood is estimated at 45m3/s. A subsequent flood study indicated that it was not feasible to prevent overtopping of the dam. Instead, it recommended that the proposed works should include measures to protect the dam against overtopping flows.

The solution
The client considered the options on the basis of hydraulics, associated civil design, environmental impact and cost. The modification of the left bank, to function as a second auxiliary spillway, was identified as the preferred design option. This included installing a new floodgate on the crest road adjacent to the spillway, to prevent flow spilling south from the additional spillway during operation, as well as installing a second floodgate at the southern end of the dam adjacent to the existing (secondary) spillway, to prevent flow spilling north from the spillway during operation.
Lift hinge floodgates were specified, due to the need for maintaining a flat walkway for pedestrians and cyclists. This was a particularly novel project, as it was the first time Flood Control International’s floodgates have been used as flow diversion gates to protect an existing dam spillway.

- Thames Water Flood Resilience
Thames Water Flood ResilienceFor Thames Water, fluvial flooding from rivers is a much larger risk than coastal flooding due to there being a higher number of assets potentially being affected and the wider impact when this type of flooding occurs. During AMP6 (2015-2020), Thames Water successfully delivered a number of fluvial flood protection projects, utilising a framework agreement between themselves and Flood Control International; this included works at Maple Lodge, Coppermills, Rye Meads and East Hyde, plus several more at risk sites. More recently during AMP7 (2020-2025), several sites were identified as being critically at risk of flooding, and so a programme of works was initialised to enable protection measures to be implemented swiftly and effectively. The solution
In early 2022, MWH Treatment appointed Flood Control International under a preferred supplier engagement contract, to carry out individual site surveys and to propose design solutions, in order to develop a detailed design and target cost. Pivotal to meeting the DWI regulatory date, Flood Control International provided options for comprehensive solutions across all four sites to safeguard against potential fluvial, pluvial, or groundwater flooding events. The final, accepted proposal, which encompassed the design, manufacture, installation and water testing of various flood prevention measures, including hinged floodgates, SR4 security rated flood doors, vertically hinged pivot floodgates, demountable slot-in barriers, steel plate walls, and other site-specific solutions, was completed on time in November 2023, following full contract award in September 2022. Liam Madigan, MWH Treatment Project Manager, commented:“Flood Control International, a trusted subcontractor to MWH Treatment, brought the expertise and professionalism required to review the proposed solutions through collaboration, and offered opportunities during the design phase which led to both cost and time savings to the programme.”

Premier Foods (Ambrosia, Devon) Floo...Home to family favourites, including custard and rice pudding for over 100 years, Premier Foods’ Ambrosia site in Devon installed low level temporary floodgates many years ago to mitigate against the risk of flooding. It was decided that these flood protection measures required updating, reflecting both local and global environmental changes. Just like Flood Control International, Premier Foods provide the highest quality products to their respective markets. In turn, they expect high quality equipment to be installed on their own sites, which is just one of the reasons we worked so well together to complete their flood mitigation programme.The requirement
The clients’ objective, working closely with their insurance partner, was to find a way to protect key assets at the site, that would keep the plant running in the event the local river level rose such that the site becomes inundated. It was clear that it would have been uneconomical to protect the whole expansive site, so the team identified key areas and assets at risk of flooding and at what depth they needed to be protected to. A risk value versus cost outlay exercise was conducted on everything below the flood defence level, to help define the risks to factory output and provide a list of areas where options to prevent/mitigate exposure could be considered.

The solution
Due to the varied and complex processes on site, much time was spent assessing and understanding what was important and where the operational pinch points were, in order to develop a plant criticality list. In some areas, at risk equipment was already on raised platforms or plinths, so the additional further benefit of raising or protecting these items for the 1:500-year (0.2% chance) flood depths was assessed, against the business interruption of not using that particular production line. Following this thorough review process, a series of measures were proposed and implemented, including:- Distribution boards and control panels inside production areas were protected by a mixture of removable and permanently installed FM Approved demountable barriers.
- The main pump room and site sub-stations needed doorways protecting, so that the power supply is kept intact; therefore, secure flood doors were the obvious choice to provide flood protection up to almost 2m height.
- At the boiler house and R&D department, FM Approved slot-in barriers were installed, to protect perimeter roller shutter and access doors, protecting key equipment and also ensure continuity of steam supply to factory.

We are flexible with location so the position can be based in Dublin, Belfast or elsewhere. You will have the opportunity to join a dynamic team spread across the UK and Ireland, supporting the delivery of a variety of projects as part of a major capital investment programme.You will play an important role in the team, developing technical solutions & providing advice to our clients. You will provide technical expertise to ensure projects are delivered to cost, schedule & quality standards and work collaboratively amongst multi-disciplinary teams to ensure first class delivery of our projects. You will work closely with external stakeholders & clients to develop long term relationships.About You
You will be Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or other relevant subject and have some experience of working within the regulated water industry.You will have knowledge of water and wastewater infrastructure/networks and treatment. Due to the nature of upcoming projects, ideally, you will also have experience in areas such as Clean Water and Wastewater Treatment, Trunk Mains and Large Diameter Pipeline Design.Ideally, you’ll have previous consultancy experience in a design role.Most importantly, you’ll embody our values and ethos of client focus and service excellence and have a passion for making a difference in the Water sector.Why Join us?

Following a number of successful frameworks bids across the water industry, and in preparation for the most challenging AMP ever, we are expanding our high-performing engineering teams across the country. In Newcastle, we are excited to have been appointed as a Strategic Technical Partner by Northumbrian Water for the AMP8 period. Stantec provide a range of technical enabling, solution delivery and design services to support Northumbrian Water in achieving its vision to be the leading provider of sustainable water and wastewater services. In order to continue providing our clients with our expert service, we are looking to recruit a Senior Civil Engineer into our team Newcastle on the picturesque Quayside. You will become part of an international team, redefining our landscape with sustainability, the environment and the communities we serve at the heart of everything we do. As a Senior Civil Engineer, you will work across the entire project lifecycle in asset planning, strategy, concept design, outline design & detailed design. We are interested in speaking with passionate engineers with design experience within the UK water industry. You’ll hold a degree in Civil Engineering and ideally have achieved Chartered status with a relevant professional body such as ICE or CIWEM. You will have gained experienced delivering community focused projects, whilst working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to delivery innovative solutions. We will support your growth & development through training & project exposure, though prior experience within storm overflows, SUDS, surface water management & sewage treatment would be beneficial.
