Golden Pass LNG Perimeter Storm Surge Protection Barrier
Situated on the Gulf Coast near Sabine Pass, Texas, Golden Pass LNG is one of the largest liquefied natural gas terminals in the world. The LNG terminal site is in a coastal hurricane floodplain, where the 100-year flood elevation is based on a storm surge under hurricane conditions, with potential flooding effect from the Gulf of Mexico.
The requirement
Golden Pass required the installation of a perimeter storm surge protection barrier to encircle the new LNG facility. The barrier was primarily constructed from imported materials and fill, with a finished top-of-barrier elevation of 16 feet NGVD.
The solution
Flood Control International was responsible for the design, client design co-ordination, manufacture, delivery and installation supervision of a tailor-made floodgate for the main entrance to the site.
Specifically, we provided a 30’ long x 13’ high winched sliding floodgate for this important coastal site, to protect against possible hurricane storm surge flooding. Wave and debris loads were considered for this exposed site, and the design needed to be simple to use and reliable as well as strong enough to withstand the large forces at work.
For ease of transportation, the floodgate was designed from the outset, to be manufactured and shipped in two halves. FCI sent a supervisor to assist with the assembly of the gate on-site, and for the commissioning of the gate once installed.
