The project focused on using cutting-edge and environmentally friendly technologies to lower carbon emissions and protect natural ecosystems. The Boherbue Wastewater Treatment Plant integrates advanced treatment processes and renewable energy solutions, surpassing conventional methods. Key innovations include:

  1. Sludge Drying Reed Beds (SDRB) that significantly reduce sludge export volumes and allow for direct land spreading without chemical conditioning, enhancing environmental benefits.
  2. Solar technology, with 50kW panels producing 42,500kWh annually, contributes to substantial carbon emission reductions.
  3. Leveraging an existing constructed wetlands for stormwater overflow, promoting diverse ecosystems and sustainable water management.

The Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) model facilitated efficient planning, collaboration, and timely project delivery, ensuring compliance with stringent EPA standards. This holistic approach sets a new standard for sustainable wastewater treatment, improving operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.

This comprehensive approach resulted in one of Ireland’s most sustainable wastewater treatment facilities, setting a new standard for future projects in the sector.
