Anglian Water’s @one Alliance’s AMP8 phosphorus removal programme sets a new industry benchmark

Anglian Water’s @one Alliance’s AMP8 phosphorus removal programme sets a new industry benchmark

Anglian Water’s @one Alliance has reached a significant milestone in the delivery of its ambitious AMP8 investment programme, marking ten months of progress on what represents one of the most substantial periods of infrastructure enhancement in the company’s history.

Central to Anglian Water’s £10 billion plan is a £750 million phosphorus removal programme, the largest portfolio of its kind ever undertaken by Anglian Water’s @one Alliance and one that is set to deliver lasting environmental benefits across the region.

The AMP8 phosphorus removal programme comprises an extensive portfolio of 245 individual schemes, each designed to reduce phosphorus concentrations in treated wastewater. By tackling phosphorus at source, the programme aims to significantly improve river water quality, protect sensitive habitats and enhance biodiversity across Anglian Water’s operating area. Excess phosphorus is a well-known contributor to eutrophication, which can degrade river ecosystems, reduce oxygen levels and harm aquatic life. Addressing this challenge at scale is therefore a critical step in safeguarding the health of local watercourses.

Building on the achievements of AMP7

This latest phase builds on the achievements of AMP7, during which Anglian Water invested £338 million across 170 sites to reduce phosphate releases and improve environmental outcomes. During AMP8, Anglian Water says it not only plans to expand the scale of this work but will also deepen its ambition, reflecting increasingly stringent environmental standards and growing public and regulatory expectations around water quality and ecological protection.

The company says that delivering a programme of this magnitude requires a highly coordinated and collaborative approach. Anglian Water says its @one Alliance has been established to meet this challenge and is uniquely positioned to lead the delivery of the portfolio. The Alliance brings together eight strategic partners: Anglian Water Services, Balfour Beatty, Binnies, Barhale, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB), MWH Treatment, Sweco and Skanska. Working alongside a wider supply chain, the Alliance operates as an integrated team, combining expertise across design, construction, commissioning and long-term asset performance.

Standardised designs and delivery approaches

The company believes that one of the defining strengths of the @one Alliance model is its focus on standardisation and repeatability. By developing standardised designs and delivery approaches, the Alliance is able to accelerate programme delivery, improve safety, reduce cost and minimise carbon impacts. Enhanced programme planning and a long-term view of asset performance also enable more resilient solutions, ensuring that investments made today continue to deliver benefits well into the future.

Chris Good, Delivery Director for Water Recycling at Anglian Water, has highlighted the long-term vision underpinning the programme. He notes that the work currently being delivered represents only the beginning, with the programme designed to ensure compliance with demanding environmental requirements while protecting ecosystems for generations to come. This emphasis on legacy and sustainability reflects Anglian Water’s broader commitment to creating a resilient water network that balances customer needs with environmental stewardship.

The scale of the phosphorus removal programme is significant not only in absolute terms, but also within the context of AMP8 as a whole. Accounting for approximately 7.5 per cent of Anglian Water’s total AMP8 investment, the programme underlines the strategic importance placed on water quality and environmental protection. It also demonstrates how targeted, proactive investment can address some of the most pressing challenges facing the water sector.

As AMP8 continues, the phosphorus removal programme is expected to play a key role in setting new benchmarks for the industry. Through collaborative delivery, innovation and a clear focus on long-term outcomes, Anglian Water and its @one Alliance partners are confident they are showing how large-scale environmental programmes can be delivered efficiently and responsibly. The company says that for communities across the region, the benefits will be cleaner rivers, healthier ecosystems and a more sustainable water future.
