Maintaining compliant treated effluent during periods of increased hydraulic loading can present significant operational challenges for wastewater treatment works, particularly where additional treatment capacity is required at short notice. At Leintwardine Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), Severn Trent required a rapid tertiary treatment solution capable of increasing solids removal performance while integrating seamlessly with the existing process infrastructure. 
Purestream Process Solutions was engaged to undertake the process design and supply of an advanced tertiary filtration system to provide additional treatment capacity and support ongoing effluent compliance. The project demanded a fast-track approach, with the solution supplied within one week of order receipt while ensuring compatibility with the site’s existing pumping arrangements, electrical systems and operational requirements. 
Design and implementation
A key challenge was integrating new treatment equipment into an operational wastewater treatment process with minimal disruption to day-to-day activities. The project team assessed the existing site layout, pumping arrangements and process requirements to determine the most effective solution and identify suitable pipework routes that would maintain safe access around the treatment works.
The selected solution comprised a six-disk pile cloth filter designed to treat flows of up to 14 l/s, together with a dedicated backwash pump system, associated pipework and electrical equipment. The equipment was configured to work alongside the existing treatment infrastructure, providing additional tertiary solids removal capacity during periods of elevated flow and loading. 
To simplify installation and commissioning, electrical equipment was supplied specifically for connection to the existing site control panel, ensuring operational compatibility and minimising modifications to the existing control system. 
Operational benefits
The completed installation delivered a number of operational benefits. The additional tertiary treatment capacity enhanced solids removal performance and supported continued compliance with treated effluent requirements during challenging operating conditions. Backup pumps were also incorporated to improve process resilience and provide greater operational security. 
Telemetry signals were included within the system design, enabling operators to identify potential equipment issues at an early stage and respond proactively to minimise the risk of process interruptions. The project was further supported through a flexible hire-to-purchase arrangement, providing commercial flexibility for the client while addressing an immediate operational need. 
Outcome
Through the rapid design, supply and integration of a tertiary filtration system, Purestream delivered an effective solution that increased treatment capacity, improved operational robustness and supported effluent compliance at Leintwardine WwTW. The project demonstrates how modular tertiary treatment technologies can be deployed quickly and effectively to address emerging process challenges while minimising disruption to existing site operations.
