Purestream Process Solutions

Radford WwTW

Integrated modular treatment technologies increased capacity by 68 l/s at Radford WwTW, delivering statutory compliance, improved effluent quality and greater operational resilience.

Modular treatment technologies from Purestream

Purestream Process Solutions delivered a major wastewater treatment upgrade at Radford Wastewater Treatment Works for South West Water under the AMP7 framework. The scheme was driven by the need to achieve statutory compliance while increasing treatment capacity and improving final effluent quality for the local community.

Challenges

Initially developed as a temporary treatment solution, the project evolved into a permanent installation, requiring a flexible and collaborative approach throughout delivery. Key challenges included implementing hydraulic and biological process upgrades within the existing treatment works, coordinating multiple stakeholders and maintaining progress against demanding compliance-driven timescales.

Solution

Working as part of a fully integrated delivery team, Purestream provided a turnkey solution encompassing design, manufacture, installation and commissioning. The project combined OCU’s MEICA and civil engineering capabilities with Purestream’s modular treatment technologies, including dissolved air flotation (DAF), submerged aerated filters (SAF), moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) and lamella clarifiers.

A new side-stream treatment plant was installed to increase treatment capacity by 68 l/s, serving a population equivalent of approximately 6,500. Modular treatment units were manufactured off site, helping to reduce programme risks and improve installation efficiency. The project also supported local economic growth through partnerships with Devon and Cornwall-based businesses involved in the construction of the SAF and MBBR systems.

Outcomes

Delivered from concept through to commissioning in less than 12 months, the upgraded works achieved statutory compliance and consistently met effluent quality requirements for BOD, suspended solids and ammonia. The completed scheme provides enhanced treatment resilience, increased capacity and long-term environmental benefits for the local community.
