Purestream Process Solutions

Matlock WwTW

Submerged aerated filter installed at Matlock WwTW to increase biological treatment capacity, maintain ammonia compliance and support long-term treatment performance.

Delivery of the Purestream submerged aerated filter

Matlock Wastewater Treatment Works serves the Matlock area and surrounding catchments, providing wastewater treatment for both domestic and industrial customers. To support ongoing effluent compliance and strengthen biological treatment performance, Severn Trent Water commissioned Purestream Process Solutions to design, supply and install a Submerged Aerated Filter (SAF) unit.

Challenges

The project was developed to help the works consistently achieve Environment Agency ammonia consent standards by increasing biological treatment capacity and maintaining optimal treatment conditions. A key challenge during delivery was arranging the transportation and installation of the treatment unit across a bridge with restricted width and weight limitations, requiring detailed logistical planning and coordination.

Solution

Following careful preparation, Purestream supplied and installed an ST1200 SAF unit in accordance with the client’s requirements. Specialist transport and craneage operations were coordinated to ensure the unit could be safely delivered and positioned within the restricted access area, with all works completed in compliance with relevant lifting and safety regulations.

Outcome

The installed SAF unit provides additional biological treatment capacity, maintaining low ammonia concentrations within the final effluent and supporting continued regulatory compliance. Following upstream treatment processes, flows are directed through the SAF before discharge to the final settlement chamber and subsequent release to the River Derwent. Designed to treat flows of up to 10 litres per second, the system delivers a reliable and efficient enhancement to the site’s existing treatment infrastructure.
