Trant Scheme Shortlisted for Infrastructure Award
The project saw delivery of a highly complex upgrade of Sandown WSW on the Isle of Wight, which supplies drinking water to residents and visitors in the South-East of the island. Trant overcame numerous challenges including limited space and extensive buried services on the historic brownfield site, while achieving all 13 regulator-defined milestones through strong collaboration and delivering an innovative, low-carbon solution.
Trant’s proposed storage design achieved major programme, cost and risk reductions, minimising below-ground construction activities, temporary works, and associated health and safety concerns. Works included power supply, pump and storage tank upgrades. For the power supply upgrades, a new incoming supply was installed in parallel with the existing system, allowing full commissioning and testing before changeover to minimise disruption and maximise potable water production.
The scheme maintained Trant’s outstanding safety record across 102,852 man-hours of construction activity. 483 safety observations were raised by the workforce, demonstrating high levels of engagement and awareness.
Regional economic benefit was generated, with significant investment in the local supply chain and majority of the workforce sourced from the local area.
Several community initiatives were also delivered, included sponsoring a new skateboard park, installing bird and dormouse boxes in nearby woodland, and organising a litter pick along the Red Squirrel Trail.
The project sets a benchmark for excellence and delivers long-term infrastructure resilience for isle. It has received extensive client recognition, exemplified by the receipt of the Southern Water “Team of the AMP” award.
The shortlisting for ICE South East Engineering Excellence Awards 2026 is testament to the outstanding commitment, professionalism and teamwork shown by Trant’s Process & Water team over the course of a challenging project – and a fantastic achievement for everyone involved.
Well done to the team for their exceptional work and best of luck to all the shortlisted teams and projects at the awards ceremony, which will take place in Maidstone on 17th June.
