New Cruise Terminal Building, Portsmouth International Port
The new cruise terminal building at Portsmouth International Port needed a pump station to manage its foul water network. Due to an increase in the number of cruise ships calling at Portsmouth, the existing terminal (built in 2011) is undergoing an extension to accommodate an anticipated extra 250,000 passengers on top of the 2 million travellers it receives annually. Dutypoint worked closely with contractors to manufacture and commission a Horizontal GRP Chamber suitable for this project, which aims to be carbon neutral by 2030.
Project challenge
As with any construction project, timing, cost, and safety were all essential considerations for the Dutypoint team working on the terminal expansion at Portsmouth International Port. All elements of the solution we provided needed to be reliable and meet the specifications set by the contractors. We went above and beyond, adapting the standard design to supply a Horizontal GRP Chamber that would suit the application’s needs.
We were in constant communication with the contractors to ensure we were on top of their deadlines and supplied all necessary information and technical specifications so they could check our solution was fully compliant before delivery and installation. Once we had sign-off, the challenge was getting it assembled and commissioned on time. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure it was in situ on the date given to allow the rest of the project to continue to run smoothly.
Project solution
For this project, Dutypoint designed, manufactured and commissioned a made-to-measure horizontal GRP pump station, including sumps for pump operation. The Vortech® Plus Horizontal GRP has many advantages over traditional systems, offering multiple internal configurations to suit the requirements of any project. The system only requires one tank, with surface water in one end and foul water in the other, to conserve valuable space on site. For foul water applications like this project, it can include mixers and aeration to stop septicity. The sump functions as the operational area of the pump station, while the main chamber provides emergency storage for the terminal.
Products used
Vortech Plus Horizontal GRP: The Vortech™ Horizontal GRP pump stations are available in a range of diameters from 1200 mm diameter up to 4000 mm. The tank can be manufactured in any length from 2000 mm up to 26,500 mm long with capacities in a one-piece tank of 300,000 litres. These tanks are often used where there are flow rate restrictions and attenuation is required for surface water and foul water.
