Dual pump stations installed for busy distribution hub

Symmetry Park is a major regional distribution facility located in Biggleswade, Central Bedfordshire. It is a hub of commercial activity and has a high volume of distribution from large clients from various sectors, including the Co-operative Food Group Limited. Just off the busy A1 in Stratton Business Park, this premium location offers excellent links to the national motorway network and relies on solid infrastructure to keep operations running smoothly. Dutypoint were asked to size and supply suitable productions for the foul and stormwater pumping stations.

Project challenge

Due to the size of the site, Symmetry Park has high volumes of storage and discharge rates. At 61,400 square meters, this logistical space extends 95 acres and consists of five units. As such it needed a dependable system of pumps, to ensure that all the wastewater was processed correctly, and the site was kept sanitised and complied with hygiene standards. With larger projects such as this, it is important to install pumps that can handle the volume of water needing to be pumped every day. By using a dual drainage system, Dutypoint reduced the burden on the water treatment system.

Project solution

With a range of pump stations available, Dutypoint proposed two different products to suit the applications. To handle the foul water from kitchens, bathrooms etc., Dutypoint supplied two horizontal GRP pumps that have 24-hour storage, and access turrets and sumps. For foul water applications, mixers and aeration can be installed to stop septicity, so it was a perfect option for such a large site.

For the stormwater solution, Dutypoint QuikForm® underground chambers were used. These chambers are flexible, and durable, and save installation costs, while still offering the highest level of filtration. QuikForm® chambers were delivered to the site as a fully pre-assembled system. They have a reduced environmental impact and can be installed easily, in contrast to traditional in-situ concrete chambers. This dual solution met the high volumes of storage and discharge and ensured Symmetry Park could run smoothly.

Products used

  • Vortech Plus Horizontal GRP Pump Station: The Vortech™ Horizontal GRP pump stations are available in a range of diameters from 1200 mm diameter up to 4000 mm. The tank can be manufactured in any length from 2000 mm up to 26,500 mm long with capacities in a one-piece tank of 300,000 litres. These tanks are often used where there are flow rate restrictions and attenuation is required for surface water and foul water.
  • QuikForm®: QuikForm® is a revolutionary underground chamber incorporating an innovative modular concrete shuttering system, reducing the volume of concrete used and the labour-intensive backfill and cover installation process. The QuikForm® pump chamber is delivered to site as an assembled system and is super durable and suitable for up to 8 m submersion below the water table. QuikForm® shuttering has an optimum shape and width to achieve the required strength without using more concrete than necessary.
