Environment Agency’s 2024 Mapping & Modelling Framework

WSP and Binnies JV appointed by the Environment Agency to Mapping and Modelling Framework to deliver flood risk mapping and modelling

The Environment Agency’s (EA) 2024 Mapping and Modelling Framework (MMF) will be used to deliver national, catchment and local scale flood risk mapping and modelling to support the EA’s understanding and communication of climate change associated flood risk both strategically and to support flood forecasting.

Leading multidisciplinary professional services consultancy WSP and Binnies, whole lifecycle water and environmental services provider, have been appointed in joint venture to the EA’s 2024 MMF to deliver national, catchment and local scale flood risk mapping and modelling.

WSP and Binnies are amongst six delivery partners supporting the national framework at a value of £52.5m over 3 years, with the option of an additional year at a value of up to £17.5m. Building on the existing successful relationship WSP and Binnies have with the EA, they will draw on the expertise of their respective water teams, providing a range of services including:

  • National Modelling.
  • Fluvial.
  • Open Coast.
  • Coastal Erosion and Tidal Modelling.
  • Surface, Groundwater and Sewerage Modelling.
  • Survey and Mapping.

The work carried out under the framework will be critical in providing the evidence required to understand the impact of our changing climate. The EA will then be able to update their long-term investment scenarios to produce more detailed insights into future flood and coastal risk which in turn will help inform the pipeline of future risk management requirements.

Sonya Evans, 2024 MMF Framework Manager at the EA, said:

“The Mapping and Modelling Framework underpins the work of the Environment Agency, enabling our teams to make informed investment decisions based on data and evidence. The high standard of tender submissions shows the skills and capabilities of the UK industry, and we look forward to working with the successful delivery partners both nationally and locally.”

Dr Kat Ibbotson, Strategic Advisory Director at WSP, said:

“Due to climate change, we are facing increased risk of flooding across the country. The MMF will be fundamental in providing the evidence required to mitigate these risks and inform solutions taken forward. It is fantastic to be involved in this work and we’re looking forward to bringing our expertise in mapping and modelling to ensure the country is more resilient and able to adapt to a changing climate.”

Kevin Simpson, Flooding, Coastal and Maritime Director at Binnies UK, said:

“Having been at the forefront of digital innovation in the modelling of major water and environmental infrastructure schemes, it is exciting to be involved in the new Mapping & Modelling Framework where we will support the Environment Agency with their goal of delivering a nation resilient to climate change.”
