Project Description / Main Operations

V J Donegan & Co Ltd were appointed as main contractor on this United Utilities project. The works centred on a 15.00m diameter shaft, sunk by caisson to approx. 15m deep, converted into a detention tank to store storm water during times of heavy rainfall, preventing flooding of the local area and taking a total of 11 local homes off the flood register.

Scope and method:

  • Construction of a 15.00m diameter shaft, sunk by caisson to approx. 15m deep, and its conversion into a detention tank.
  • Construction of an in-situ reinforced concrete discharge chamber and weir chamber.
  • Upsizing of approx. 250m of the local sewer network with pipes ranging from 300mm to 750mm diameter, complete with 9 manhole chambers, followed by abandonment of the existing sewers.
  • Laying of a permanent grass paving system for HGV access across the entrance and around the new underground detention tank.
