Project Description / Main Operations

Highways England undertook the scheme to reduce peak time congestion on the A19 arterial road running north to south from the Tyne Tunnel and the A1058 Coast Road from Newcastle. The scheme included the realignment of the A19 under the existing A19 roundabout and the construction of new slip roads.

The scope of the works for V J Donegan & Co Ltd was to undertake the construction of 2 no. 4500mm and 1 no. 6000mm internal diameter caisson shafts, to be used for 1200mm diameter micro tunnel pipejacks as part of the drainage works for the scheme.

Scope and method:

  • Construction of 2 no. 4500mm internal diameter caisson shafts.
  • Construction of 1 no. 6000mm internal diameter caisson shaft.
  • All three shafts sunk from the top down using either concrete or steel cutting edges and a hydraulic shaft jacking system.
  • On reaching formation level, the shafts were grouted, caulked and the mass concrete plugs cast as per the construction drawings.
