Storm Water Storage Shaft – Brunswick Road, Altrincham
A 20.00m diameter storage shaft providing over 5,000m³ of storm water capacity, sheet piled through unstable upper strata
Storm Water Storage Shaft - Brunswick Road, Altrincham
Client: Balfour Beatty / United Utilities
Project Description / Main Operations
This project was carried out on behalf of Balfour Beatty, for United Utilities. The project was a flood alleviation scheme centred on the construction of a 20.00m diameter shaft acting as a storage tank in times of heavy rainfall.
The upper part of the shaft is supported by pre-driven steel sheet piles, a method employed due to the anticipated unstable ground conditions within the top 9.00m depth of the shaft.
Scope and method:
- Construction of a 20.00m diameter shaft, approx. 20m deep on completion, providing over 5,000m³ – 5 million litres – of storage capacity for storm water.
- Support of the upper part of the shaft by pre-driven steel sheet piles through the top 9.00m of unstable ground.
