Project Description / Main Operations

This project was carried out for Costain, on behalf of Welsh Water. A 1200mm internal diameter Iseki Super-Unclemole TBM undertook a 40m drive beneath the Chester-Holyhead railway line.

Scope and method:

  • A 40m drive beneath the Chester-Holyhead railway line using a 1200mm internal diameter Iseki Super-Unclemole TBM.
  • Sinking of a 6.00m diameter drive shaft, approx. 8m deep.
  • Sinking of a 4.00m diameter reception shaft, approx. 7m deep.
  • Both shafts constructed on either side of the Chester-Holyhead railway line in difficult ground conditions comprising very wet clays with large boulders.
