Project Description / Main Operations

V J Donegan & Co Ltd were appointed by Kier Construction to undertake this specialist subcontract, which included the design, build and installation of an underground pumping station on the extension works to HMP Featherstone.

A 9.00m internal diameter shaft was sunk by caisson method to a depth of approx. 10m in sands and gravels, founded in very weak sandstone.

Scope and method:

Sinking of a 9.00m internal diameter shaft by caisson method to approx. 10m depth in sands and gravels, founded in very weak sandstone.
Construction of surrounding structures including a valve chamber, flow control chamber, isolation penstock chamber and macerator chamber.
Interconnecting pipework, ductile iron backdrop pipework and rising main pipework.

MEICA scope

3 no. variable speed submersible pumps.
Rising main pipework and isolating penstock for maintenance purposes.
Macerator channel grinder for breaking up solids.
All associated electronic control equipment.
